An apple a day…

By  Lysette Offley

An apple a day - photo of an appleThe old adage really is true!

Along with getting enough water, vitamin D and omega 3s, Grandma was right – the humble apple a day turns out to be a super-healer too.

In tests (admittedly, in test-tubes, rather than in actual people) extracts of Red Delicious apples prevented oxidation of the ‘bad’ cholesterol ie LDL. Low Density Lipoproteins aren’t thought to be bad for you until they oxidise, and are believed to then be responsible for clogging up your arteries.

The apple extracts also stimulated absorption of the LDL in liver cells. This would be a good thing, if the same were to occur in the body, for real.

That would mean that 400grams of apples could reduce cholesterol levels in the blood, as much as a dose of statins – without the fatal ahem, ‘side-effects’!

But that’s not an apple a day, it’s four!

Better start chomping!

Bang go the sausages! And the burgers, beef and bacon!

You don’t need statin drugs
